Expert Tips

Elevated Beauty

Taking beauty beyond the red lip, the smoky eye or the ballerina bun, for after-hours, it's all about putting the edge into the classics, transforming those timeless failsafes into something way more elevated. Sharing their expert tips, make-up artist Gina Kane and hair stylist Anna Cofone demo how to master the new effortless evening look...

  • The Glow

"There’s nothing quite like the perfect glowing complexion. I use a layering technique that gives the perfect bespoke complexion," says Gina. "Take time preparing the skin, this is key. Circulation and exfoliation massage will make a huge difference to your result. Make sure to gently contour under cheekbones, jaw-line, eye-sockets and under lower lashes, sides of the nose and temples. Once done, finish with a light powder, then add a touch of moisturiser or serum on the high points of the face at the end of make-up application," she adds.

  • "For a tighter curl, use heat protection spray and small tongs. Alternate the direction to create a less 'done' look."

  • Groomed Brows

"The natural brow either untamed or gently groomed is key right now. To achieve this look brush up the hair of the brow with a brow brush or mascara wand. If the brow hair is really thick you can heat a mascara wand with a hairdryer and brush firmly through the brow to encourage it to lay flat. Fill in the gaps with very fine hair-like strokes with a pencil, then apply a brow gel to maintain the shape. Try using a brow oil or coconut oil at at night as this conditions and softens the hair," explains Gina.

  • Parallel Lines

"Push the boundaries with your liner - be creative, smudge, wing, draw layer into the waterline, deconstruct or simply go for the defined flick," Gina says. "For this, I created a double-wing style liner in black. Start by applying the liner in the centre of the top lid and work outwards to make the shape you like towards to the edge of the eye socket, then use an eyeliner brush to smooth and perfect the shape. Seal with a liquid liner to add a pop of shiny refection just in the centre of the lid."

  • Lash Shades

“A modern take on Twiggy lashes by way of clumped mascara effect. Paired with a beautiful complexion, this deconstructed, loaded mascara look is super cool. Using YSL mascara in Maroon, take care to push product into the roots and then up the entire length of the lashes and the bottom lashes. Then when still tacky, take Tweezerman slanted tweezers and clump the lashes together, then again on the lower lashes. Once dry, top up the middle length and ends to intensify,” Gina advises.

  • "For a nonchalant knot, tong pieces to create softness around the face. Twist and secure using grips and tease out."
  • Heavy Metals

Copper rises up the ranks to take gold as a key shade. Gina explains; “Starting with a simple smoky eye as a base, to build and enhance the eye I used all four of the Charlotte Tilbury Quad Eyeshadows in Dolce Vita. The brightest copper shade was popped in the centre of the lid and inner corners. To add some light into the waterline, try the Chanel waterproof pencil in Eros.” Pairing with a chrome mani is a must.

  • Vinyl Lips

"The palette goes from black gothic lips to beautiful blackcurrant, some glossy, some matte, blurred edges, soft berry stains and full on deep cherry pouts,” says Gina. “Prep your lips by rolling a cotton bud with primer. Lips were lined with YSL Universal Lip Definer which is a velvety transparent liner to prevent lip colour bleeding, followed by YSL Rouge Pur Couture the Mats in 205. Adding some gloss at the centre of a dark lip will make the lips appear fuller."
