The Capsule

The Capsule

Fashion has come full-circle. Trends may blow in and out with the seasons, but the move towards perfecting those perennials has never felt more important. The leather jacket, the LBD, the Breton stripe top... those once ubiquitous and often unsung pieces at the core of our wardrobe are now taking their turn in the sartorial spotlight. Hard-working heroes, delivering total style return on investment, here's how to get back to those buildable basics with our ultimate need-to-own edit.

  • If there's one area of your wardrobe well worth the investment, it has to be your outerwear. Go big on luxurious fabrics, strong silhouettes and neutral shades to build up a dependable base that will see you through the cold season in style. Keep it fresh each year by layering up with more directional accessories.

  • "Fashions fade, style is eternal."
    Yves Saint Laurent

A key contender in the outerwear stakes, you can’t go wrong with a camel coat in your winter line-up. Cemented into icon status by Italian fashion house Max Mara, whether belted, wrap, double-breasted, even reversible, in lighter-spun wools, it's quite simply the ultimate wear-with-everything investment.

To avoid cold weather fashion fatigue, keep your outerwear in rotation and ensure you have a long coat in either navy, black or grey. Cocoon, rounded, military or wrap silhouettes served in either mid-calf or ankle-grazing lengths for AW17, look to the heavier, lined wools here to cut strong shapes and keep you wrapped-up when the weather really hits.

For a more in-between seasons, day-to-night coat option, the trench is a prerequisite and is never out of style. While there is no shortage of options out there, few can compete with trench founder, Burberry. At its most classic, muted hues of black, navy, honey or stone in double-breasted, at its most directional, seasonal embellishments, single-breasted and playful details, all envisaged in shorter, midi or full-length styles. Perfect for topping eveningwear or downtime with sneakers, it’s a true buy-now-love-forever piece.

Having a select edit of shorter jackets in your style arsenal is also key. While leather jackets can add that laidback and confident-cool edge to almost any look, they’re not necessarily for everyone, in which case, the recent resurgence of the bomber jacket provides a worthy alternative, particularly in hybrid form when given varsity or biker elements. Start simple in pared-down styles and build up to the more embellished and patterned options. Meanwhile, the blazer’s sharp blend of suiting-meets-preppy adds a deft dash of precision to top all looks. Start your capsule off with two or more in varying styles  think boyfriend, cropped, double or single-breasted, popped collar and even crested. Throw it on over a downtime look for an instant pop of polish.

  • "Team a classic shirt with cigarette pants for a nod to Parisian chic."

Enjoying time in the sartorial spotlight, shirts are having a big moment right now, with just about every iteration imaginable: from deconstructed to Bardot, embellished to embroidered. Nothing, however, speaks better to those what-to-wear-today wardrobe dilemmas than the artful simplicity of the classic shirt. Popped collar, rolled sleeves or just straight-up, in white, light blue or pin-stripe, its uncomplicated, timeless appeal makes it a vital building block in all wardrobes.

Team your classic shirts with tailored trousers or cigarette pants for a nod to quintessential, Parisian nonchalant-chic. Ensure your trouser collection features at least one pair of wide-leg, culotte, jogger and slim options, and build up from there.

There’s every reason to invest in the perfect LBB (Little Black Bag) to add to your core collection, and even more reason to go for a signature piece with feature hardware. Look to totes and shoppers which are more spacious for day, but for a little style kudos, the Pierce from J.W.Anderson is a worthy statement option, while the unisex Loewe Puzzle is a firm favourite with the style set. Add a black or metallic clutch or two into the mix for evening occasions the Alexander McQueen Skull or the Chloé Faye are style mainstays.

  • "Low-key moments call for box-fresh sneakers."

Flats you absolutely can’t do without include a pair of black loafers there’s a reason the Gucci Brixton and Jordaan are often sold out; or for a more relaxed take, try backless slides or slipper iterations. Ballet pumps or low block heel pumps are handy if you need to stay chic when running around town, while a sharp pair of lace-up Derbys or brogues also err on the more practical-yet-smart side of the shoe spectrum.

For more dressy occasions, pointy-toe pumps are a must in minimal hues, but no need go too pared-down on the detail – look to Valentino’s Rockstuds, plexi panels courtesy of Gianvito Rossi or lace-up elements served by Aquazzura. And once you’ve got your pumps nailed, get a little more adventurous with the major footwear silhouette right now - the mule. Try No. 21’s statement bow mules or for something more understated, opt for a simple black satin midi heel mule.

Low-key moments call for box-fresh, white, minimal sneakers. Make yours low-tops or tennis shoes and look to Isabel Marant’s quintessential Bart, Givenchy’s neat Knot sneakers or something a touch more playful from Gucci. Try to maintain their brilliant whiteness to keep them more fashion than functional. But, if it’s lived-in you’re after, Golden Goose offers up a more pre-loved vintage look to its sneakers.

  • "You can never own enough Breton."

Few sartorial elements call out relaxed elegance more effortlessly than the Breton stripe. A definitive downtime mainstay for decades, its easy, chilled vibes lend perfectly to all manner of styling, as low-key or amped-up as you like. Sweaters, cardigans and tees, get collecting you really can never own enough Breton.

Investing in luxury denim is also a must. Frame, 7 For All Mankind, Paige and Current/Elliott all offer up a variety of cuts, washes and styles, so start with a skinny, a cropped flare and a boyfriend or wide-leg and build up your jeans capsule from there.

The Capsule - Dresses

Finally, for evening, stock your wardrobe with a neat capsule of monochrome dresses they’re the perfect fall-back when nothing else feels right. Mini, midi and maxi, make sure you have varying lengths and silhouettes, from fitted to flowing, and play with subtle textures and minimal embellishments. Style with more statement pieces to keep your look on-point each season.
