Whether collaborating with key brands or being snapped at the shows during Fashion Month, digital style star and founder of fashion, travel and lifestyle blog TheHautePursuit.com, Vanessa Hong is a must-follow for effortless minimalism with a unique edge. From style tips to tackling trends, Vanessa shares her take...
"It’s the creative aspect that really interests me. Art and fashion have always been in my life - from attending Art/Dance school all through my childhood to seeing my mom go to Fashion school in the ‘90s. Fashion can be magical: the storytelling, the craftsmanship, the shows - it’s like a dream."
"With trends, you should dissect something out of what’s happening right now in fashion and take in what suits you - your body, your style. You don’t need to ascribe 100% to any particular look."
"My personal style is very minimal, it’s very restrained. I like details; not the ones that scream out at you, but the subtle ones. Subtle details in an outfit could be a great zipper, a great fringe, a hidden pocket."
On How Style Evolves...
"I think my style has become more refined over the years. A lot of people think I have always been a ‘minimalist’ but I’ve done it all, boho, rocker chic, vintage, which I feel are still elements of my personality. I choose to focus on a more timeless look now - clothes that don’t cater to ‘It’ trends but rather a more modern, restrained sensibility."

"My party style is usually more feminine than what I would wear during the day. I often like to do separates so a top and bottom than a full dress, something that is fitted and something that is not. My party shoe is always very, very high, the higher the better - I never wear flats to parties."
"My pre-party ritual is always a long bath to prepare for the night. I love paper masks. I set the mask on for a few hours. It gives me great skin. I put on my outfit to some good music and then head out. For my typical party beauty look I always have my hair slicked back because I think that’s really sexy. I do bare face with a dark lip and always with my cat eye."
"My ultimate piece of clothing would have to be a pair of Isabel Marant leather skinnies I’ve had for five years now."
"I like to shop most in Beijing. I love it there because there are a lot of small shops in and around the city, a lot of up-and-coming independent designers. There’s a really cool art and cultural scene happening there, which spawns a lot of fashion; you just have to find it."
"One of my favourite things to do is to take a long bath with Epsom salts. I bring a small towel to steam my face and exfoliate. It’s the most amazing and stress relieving thing I can do for myself. For great skin, the number one rule is to be hydrated. Water is my best friend and my second best friend is my facialist."
"In terms of fragrance I’m very loyal. I’ve been wearing TOM FORD Black Orchid for the last 10 years. I really like scents that are a bit more unisex, that have a musk to them and a little bit of mystery."
1. Buy better therefore buy less: I think we need to re-invest in great staple pieces again. I believe in the old adage: ‘less is more'
2. I like the idea of mixing - you will rarely see this in a ‘complete’ look. If I’m wearing a skirt, I’ll pair it with a men’s tee or a boxy jacket; it’s all about balance.
3. Keep it simple: I feel the simpler the outfit, the more impactful it is.
