For many, a coat isn’t just something that goes over the top of your outfit, but one of the first things to consider when putting a look together. Whether it needs to complement office tailoring, match your downtime skinny jeans and sweater, or keep you snug and stylish come the evening when, underneath, you’re fashioning your favourite Little Black Dress, your top layer is just as, if not more, important than your whole ensemble.
So in 1981, when Max Mara’s iconic 101801 camel coat was created, it became a style perennial the world over, and has since gone on to sell over 140,000 pieces.
Having been updated over the years, iterations of the brand’s famed camel coat have been worn by Jessica Alba, Katie Holmes, Emma Stone, Eva Mendes and Kate Middleton, to name a few.
The versatile statement hero originated from a sketch by heralded designer, Anne-Marie Beretta, who was known for being as innovative with her use of fabric as she was with her designs. Taking 163 minutes from start to finish to create, the Italian label’s 101801 camel coat is a labour of love and the result of tireless passion and artisanship. Crafted in a super-soft cashmere blend, the cover-up is instantly recognisable for its ever-chic calf length, statement shawl collar and irresistible, seasonless camel hue.
"Mine is ready for its 16th winter; I keep it proudly in my wardrobe and it always looks like new," says Laura Lusuardi, Max Mara’s Fashion Coordinator.
Now available in several styles, the brand’s camel coat is still a coveted fashion icon today.
