Weekend Getaway: The Great Outdoors

The Great Outdoors style edit

From the sprawling fells of the Lake District to Cornwall’s rugged coastline and Scotland’s loch-dotted Highlands, there can be no better sense of escape than venturing out into the great outdoors and embracing Britain’s vast and varied landscape. But what of the wardrobe demands adventures such as these can pose? In the name of #HeWhoTravels, we turned to globetrotters Gavin Fan, Chris John Millington, Gwilym C Pugh and Q Mike to find out why weekend getaways are so important and how they tackle packing for one. "It’s nice to put the camera, laptop and phone away in exchange for some hills, open roads and cold air," shares Millington, adding: "Nothing beats it."

Follow the four on their #HeWhoTravels adventures with Harrods by following @HarrodsMan on Instagram.

  • "On a weekend away I’m more casual," explains Beijing-based travel blogger Gavin Fan, counting a combination of warm woollen sweaters and well-cut trousers from the likes of Maison Margiela as his go-tos. Thom Browne’s hooded parka and a pair of Chelsea boots make for stylish yet practical finishing touches.

For Cardiff native Gwilym C Pugh, functionality is key. "In the city it’s only really the seasons or the weather that will determine my style, but for a weekend escape it’s all about the setting and the environment," he shares. Prepared for every eventuality, Pugh’s packing list – all held within a Globe-Trotter case – includes well-worn Citizens of Humanity jeans and cashmere sweaters as well as tidy TOM FORD chinos and a single-breasted Burberry coat to add sartorial flair.

  • "No matter where you’re off to, it’s nice to have a variety of options," says Vietnam-born, London-based blogger Q Mike, ticking all the boxes with a Solid Homme overcoat, tailored trousers and Gucci monk shoes for browsing countryside estates and graphic knitwear and sneakers to take to the outdoors. La Mer is counted on for skincare, whatever the pursuit.

  • What are Scottish travel fan Chris John Millington’s great outdoors essentials? "A sturdy pair of leather boots, thick socks and a solid jacket – with those essentials packed I can build from there!" A Loewe roll neck sweater, Canali denim shirt and jeans make up the rest of his must-pack edit, not forgetting TOM FORD’s essential beard oil.
