Jason Hughes Talks AW16 Trends

Jason Hughes Talks AW16 Trends

From Rock 'N' Roll to Utilitarian, we turned to Jason Hughes to style Autumn/Winter 2016’s key trends, catching up with the Wallpaper* Fashion Editor to find out his personal styling tips and the wardrobe staples he thinks are worthy of investment, too.

On His Personal Style…

"I have a kind of uniform that continually updates from season to season; it's not dictated by trends but by what I know will work for me. I never like to look too formal but there's a definite element of smartness played against something easy."

On Translating New Season Trends Into His Look…

"I tend to focus more on particular items from collections by designers I like and that fit my style, but I always invest in a couple of stand-out catwalk pieces that are specific to a season. I’ll then wear these pieces with more sober wardrobe staples so as not to overdo it."

  • Rock 'N' Roll

"This trend should feel effortless and not too overdone. It’s important to have a balance between having a special piece – such as a statement jacket – and something you’d wear every day, like a pair of jeans. The vibe is what a '70s rock star would wear off-duty, something they might have found in a thrift store in San Francisco, rather than something they’d wear on stage."

  • "It’s all about the coat for the Utilitarian trend – look to military accents, army shades and volume for easy layering."
  • Luxe Sweatshirts

"This season, if you’re going to wear a sweatshirt, wear one that’s bold – either thanks to a slogan or some sort of eye-catching motif. It shouldn’t be worn in a sporty way, but rather in a sophisticated, formal manner; tuck it into jeans or trousers to achieve this."

  • "Wearing all-black can look very flat, so it’s important to think about texture. Combine velvet, knitwear and leather, for instance."
  • Embellishment

"What’s key about this trend is not to wear a total look but to pick one piece to lift an outfit. A good direction to take is to pick a sober, sporty piece such as a Valentino varsity jacket that’s been embroidered with butterflies – that’s the perfect high-low juxtaposition."

  • "The '70s look is about downtown New York, an art crowd, Studio 54, and is interpreted through jeans, Chelsea boots, blazers and knits."
On The Pieces Worthy Of Investment…

"A good jacket or coat and footwear – they are the pieces that will always elevate an outfit."

On His Ultimate Off-Duty Go-To…

"It has to be a hoodie."

On His Transitional Style Staples…

"I re-stock my wardrobe with classic white T-shirts and white sneakers season after season."

On The One Item In His Wardrobe He’d Save In A Fire…

"A black bomber jacket by Helmut Lang from his Autumn/Winter 1999 collection."
