London Fashion Week

Antonio Berardi SS18

"Remember, remember always, that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists." The Roosevelt quote – a particularly topical one – made for poignant reading in Antonio Berardi’s Spring/Summer 2018 show notes, the designer’s latest collection inspired by his parents – who emigrated from Italy to London – and their innovative way of re-appropriating old clothes.

With the familiar strings of The Godfather soundtrack opening the show, models filed out in a series of spliced, almost patchworked, tailored looks – belted, buttoned and nipped-in jackets teamed with cropped trousers or asymmetric skirts. For evening, sartorial fabrics were swapped for billowing silks and broderie anglaise, with standout translucent and cut-out detailing giving dramatic silhouettes a contemporary edge. In a colour palette that consisted mostly of black, white and red with a scattering of Prince of Wales check and flashes of dusky pink and olive, patent lace-up boots completed each and every look.
