Anya Hindmarch took us back to a rose-tinted suburbia for Spring/Summer 2018. Renowned for her subversive runway productions – think models floating over the catwalk or walking within a Rubik’s Cube – this season the London favourite created an entire three-bedroom house, complete with multi-coloured lights.
Challenging the negative connotations of the suburban lifestyle and instead find joy in the ordinary, as is Hindmarch’s wont, out came housewives wearing modern interpretations of the '70s housecoat, updated in kitsch colourways and '70s-style wallpaper prints, and paired with the designer’s take on the original house slipper – fluffy obviously. There were also shirtdresses in textural, piled prints complete with pet motifs, such as parrots and cats.
Of course, it wouldn’t be an Anya Hindmarch collection without accessories, and this season a new handbag was introduced to the family – the Chubby – shaped like the familiar poufs found in a '70s home. And what next but a roof-raising finale, literally; lifting to reveal a giant disco ball with the Hindmarch housewives streaming back out, show-goers couldn’t help but think a life in suburbia might not be so bad after all.
