Change was in the air on the first day of Milan Fashion Week, with Joan Smalls called upon to set the tone of Alberta Ferretti's Spring/Summer 2018 collection, stepping out into the sun-drenched courtyard of the Rotonda della Besana in a sleek black swimsuit and a studded pair of jelly sandals. A departure from the designer’s usual red-carpet wonders, a series of all-black chiffon ensembles was then followed by khaki and cream looks with a utility spin, put together with drawstrings, leather straps and buckles – a more understated tone for the Italian designer, she citing '90s minimalism as inspiration.
With a stellar model line-up – Gigi, Bella, Karlie and more – when it came to after-hours, the looks felt closer to home: delicately embroidered dresses (despite being teamed with athletic wind-breaker style parkas), stripped-back sequin separates and shimmering pastel lamé pieces were all finished with slicked-back hair and a heavy smoky eye. And to close? Her signature days-of-the-week cashmere sweaters – guaranteed to make the Insta-crowd go wild.
