Another season, another fabulous trip to Italy courtesy of Dolce & Gabbana – this time to the party beaches of the south. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are masters of ceremony, and for Spring/Summer 2017 the action began the day before the show when silk handkerchiefs landed on showgoers' doorsteps indicating the show theme, 'Tropico Italiano'. Once at the venue, guests were greeted by models handing out slices of fresh coconut and coconut water still in its shell – so far so tropical.
When the lights went up things got off to a kicking start as dancers hiding in the aisles teemed onto the runway for a street party, complete with Sicilian pop music and airborne somersaults, followed by the models. Needless to say, the theme found its way onto the clothes with cocktail glass prints on shift dresses, gelato cones stamped on fit-and-flare numbers, fruit and flower turbans, jewelled pool slides and Fifties-style bikinis peeping out from under sheer kaftans.
The label's now-standard food theme also continued – spaghetti bundles on a silk shift, fish prints on a demure pink pencil dress, pizza and pomodoro tunics... The line-up was as fun, kitsch and beautiful as ever. Elsewhere, matador blouses featured outsize ruffles and balloon sleeves and were teamed with jewelled minis, military jackets came heavily embellished with rosettes and floral brooches, trousers were high-waisted and cropped and denim came distressed and bejewelled. For evening, corset dresses were nothing short of sexy and black lace numbers came buttoned to the neck but still sheer or off-the-shoulder and shapely. It's going to be one hot summer.
