With a pervading theme at Fashion Month being about breaking with the norms, challenging expectations and shifting paradigms both in collections and the presentations themselves, for masters of showmanship and ingenuity Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce, Milan was an opportunity to do just that, with not one but two events. The first served up 14 hours before the second, was billed a "secret show", focusing on millennials – think sons and daughters of, in an almost debutante-style presentation of high eveningwear, to a select crowd – democratically shared on the fashion house’s Instagram Stories and under the hashtag #DGMillennials.
For their Spring/Summer 2018 showcase the next day, the designers went less princess, more "Queen of Hearts" as their theme, presenting a vast collection which maxed in a variety of prints including the face card elements from classic decks, along with hearts, fruit, vegetables, floral, fish and even zebra designs. Texture, colour and detailing are what the pair ace in, offering up floral-festooned jackets, gauzy dresses, billowing blown-out sleeves, headpieces, super-size fruity earrings, along with more fitted silhouettes and some suiting woven in.
For the less colour-inclined, however, and giving a nod to their signature corset silhouette, black in just about every style imaginable – inspired by '90s supermodels but with a contemporary D&G twist – book-ended the show, opening in chiffon, silk and lace on bodices, sheer skirts and dresses, trousers and tuxedo jackets. Closing the show in black, for their trademark power squad finale, the entire ensemble took to the runway in a sea of lingerie-style looks, each as individual and charismatic as the house itself.
