"Oh let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream. I am a traveller of both time and space..." Veronica Etro quoted the opening lyrics of Led Zeppelin's Kashmir in the show notes for her 'En Route To An Adventure' collection. Travel is a common inspiration for designers, but this season particularly, the free-spirited, adventure-seeking woman has been the starting point for several designers. Etro describes her tribe as "free-wheeling, soulful muses who dauntlessly explore the most adventurous corners of the world... They are as comfortable in a scorching stretch of the Sahara Desert as they are trekking through an urban metropolis." But first, the appropriate attire is de rigeur.
The kaftan, now an established item of clothing in its own right and not just a swimwear cover-up, appeared in micro or maxi proportions and was reworked in thick jacquards or silk faille with bold, embroidered stripes. Teamed under a brocade jacket or oversized sister coats, it moves seamlessly from beach to city.
To battle the elements were embroidered Berber-style capes with hoods and drummer boy jackets while jacquard ponchos topped leather biker pants or patchwork running shorts. There was certainly something for every eventuality.
