For Angela Missoni, designing the Spring/Summer 2017 collection was all about harnessing a sense of purity. As the matriarch of a dynastic fashion house that is world-renowned for its bold use of colour, spectacular patterns and unique, textural knitting techniques, one can only assume that must have been a challenge; but, in true Missoni fashion, the designer rose to the occasion.
Colour-blocking, whether interwoven or created by layering multiple pieces on top of one another, was key. A series of layered tank dresses in pleasing palettes – sage, icy-white and biscuit/gold, hot coral and cerulean – kicked off proceedings, followed by statement stripes in micro minis, midis, jumpsuits and sleeveless cardigans. Then came pattern, nature-inspired though, with beautifully embroidered lace and knits replicating the imbedded texture of malachite and tiger’s eye to stunning effect.
While shapes tended to loosely skim the figure, purveying, in the designer’s own words, "an informal and relaxed elegance", sarong scarves and cardigans were tied about the waist to define the silhouette. An intersection of teenie-weenie bikinis, meanwhile, proved to be a true celebration of the female form. Pure Missoni.
