Why watch a fashion show from the front row when you can be reclining in bed? That was Miuccia Prada’s suggestion for her guests as she transformed the label’s Milanese HQ into a series of rooms for her Autumn/Winter 2017 unveiling. Said beds were adorned with fluffy throws, comfy pillows and other accents that might have kitted out bedrooms around the world in the Seventies: Polaroid snaps, ripped out pages from vintage magazines and retro film posters. In keeping with the mood was the line-up, which, in true Prada form, was ultra-tactile: slouchy velvet trousers, fuzzy belts, angora skirts and crochet bras.
Mrs Prada is always challenging her audience on both an intellectual and a visual scale – here the ordinary was transported to the extraordinary via unique colour combos (a red check jacket was paired with a canary yellow skirt fringed with blue feathers and embroidered with red beading) and some seriously innovative styling (delicate satin dresses dripping with beads were teamed with feather snoods and pearl and fur bedroom slippers). A parade of kitschy shift dresses and tunic tops printed with vintage-style pin-up photos segued into a final parade of delicate satin gowns that highlighted the label’s dual ability to have fun with fashion and be the last word in elegance.
