Donatella Versace's message to the world this season was 'Love', 'Unity', 'Equality' and 'Courage', as seen emblazoned on the shirt collars, skirt hems and beanie hats of the tribe of supermodels that hit her Versace runway. Anja Rubik, Amber Valletta, Joan Smalls, Kendall Jenner and Gigi and Bella Hadid – all icons in their own right and all personifications of Donatella's definition of power, which has long since been a house pillar.
This season the Creative Director showcased a parade of sharp pant suits and sporty dresses, toughened up further by severe cat eye make-up and coloured streaks running down the models' signature poker-straight tresses. But femininity still ruled, as demonstrated by the sheer pleated skirts, strappy slip dresses, ruffled hems and cut-away dresses, which appeared in a mostly black palette, punched up with bold red, highlighter yellow and orange. Outerwear consisted either of broad-shouldered coats with pinched-in waists or shaggy shearling cocoons with vibrant-coloured trims.
