Stacey Bendet – who has been at the helm of Alice + Olivia since 2002 – can be relied upon for a theatrical presentation, and for Autumn/Winter 2018 she didn't disappoint with the introduction of the AO university; an ode to women’s movements and particular heroines that have made an impact on contemporary life.
From one area to the next – think a 'Women’s Bill of Rights' room to an 'American Revolution' space, an 'Education Garden', classrooms and libraries – compelling and dominant messaging strived to support concepts of knowledge as power, equal education and equal pay. When it came to the collection itself, the clothes were powerful but playful, combining everything from leather fringing, acid-wash denim, heavy florals and seventies-inspired velvet separates with gothic lace gowns completed with Marie Antoinette-style up-dos. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves were stacked with colour-coordinated books, reflecting full sequin-striped looks – something that will only please the brand’s loyal influencer crowd – while a boudoir area featured stately chaise longues and oriental-style beds that echoed jackets and dresses made from a mismatch of regal brocades, jacquards, leopard prints and stripes. A whirlwind of styles: fierce yet feminine.
