Change was in the air as Dennis Basso celebrated the 35th year of his eponymous label in Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church on Park Avenue, Manhattan. It would only seem fitting that such a grand venue would be mirrored by Dennis Basso’s acclaimed opulence; however, the seventy looks that were shown for Autumn/Winter 2018 felt different and somewhat less formal. Mixing eveningwear with that more suited for the day, sportswear was incorporated alongside utilitarian separates in a muted colour palette of camel, grey checks and light khaki.
Wide-leg trousers, elevated track pants and leather skirts – a first for Basso – were teamed with clean-cut T-shirts and blouses; while bare-all dresses and separates featured intrepid splits, exposed midriffs and delicate mesh panels. Not forgetting Basso’s Upper East Side regulars, however, the brand’s signature fur made its appearance via coloured stoles, hooded jackets, capes and aviator jackets, and the show closed with a series of truly ethereal embroidered gowns. Also debuting his first shoe line – think sky-scraping thigh-highs, elegant heeled sandals and sixties-style boots – it would seem that the Dennis Basso woman is equipped for any occasion.
