"This season I was inspired by the spirit of the modern voyager," the designer revealed backstage ahead of his Spring/Summer 2017 show. "From the Duchess of Windsor travelling in the 1930s with her steam trunks to Angelina Jolie going to Africa, Kate Middleton in India or our Michelle Obama on her duties as First Lady, the collection is fit for a woman exploring new cultures and creating life moments with her carefree sense of adventure and mischief."
What ensued on the runway was a line-up that covers all eventualities, from a georgette jumpsuit with mesh tank top that wouldn't look out of place on a (pristine) Vespa in Rome to a pale yellow hand-embroidered lace gown for the most formal of summer soirées and everything in between – even a fresher destination that would require a lynx and chiffon jacket as an after-hours topper. All the pieces had an effortless bohemian feel to them and tones remained warm, with earthy neutrals playing out in myriad luxe fabrics, including chiffon, tulle, sable and broadtail intricately worked amid sequins and pleats.
Clearly this voyager doesn't travel light, but who would if they had access to this summer wardrobe? "I don't believe in hand luggage only," the designer revealed.
"Once again the standout show of NYFW, Dennis Basso sent out the most beautiful, sophisticated collection that saw chiffons mixed with sable, lace mixed with fur, and suede layered over negligee dresses. This was sexy, uptown dressing at its best," said Helen David, Harrods Chief Merchant, of the show.
