Set in the opulent Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, the unveiling of Dennis Basso's Spring/Summer 2018 collection celebrated the master of eveningwear and fur's 35th year in the fashion industry. Described as an ode to the perennial jet-setter – a recurring theme across Basso's most recent collections – the stellar line-up looked to "spectacular, strong and glamorous women" who have travelled the world to exotic and interesting locales.
The first look – a hand-embroidered mini dress embroidered with delicate mosaics – had been inspired by those from Morocco, while the number of contrasting violet-hued looks that followed recalled flourishing bougainvillea found in the likes of Saint Tropez and Sardinia. From ethereal evening dresses in silk chiffons, georgette and tulle to billowing trousers teamed with barely-there bra tops, and weightless fur capes in mink, sable, fox and broadtail, the glamour and romance of travel that Basso had been so inspired by was most certainly evoked. A collection that included in excess of 70 looks, there was something to charm every member of Basso's globe-trotting crowd, and it certainly made us want to jump on a plane and get away, too.
