Infusing a sports-luxe feel into the J. Mendel Autumn/Winter 2016 collection, Gilles Mendel proved that cut means everything. Whether slashing at the shoulder – cold-shouldering is huge for AW16 – or going one-sleeved, plunging the neckline or opting for a racer neck, the J. Mendel woman is baring flesh this season. When flesh was covered up, it was covered up with cosy fur coats, so-chic Macs and oversized stoles in black, forest green – so wintry no? – camel and splashes of pillar box red.
For evening, gowns fell about the body like metallic liquid in folds and pleats, or were finished off with embellished chest pieces that decorated the décolletage wonderfully.
"Gilles Mendel rounded out NYFW with aplomb, sending out what can only be described as a stunning collection. Always famous for his craftsmanship and manipulating fabrics, this really took it to another level and I think was his best show yet. Brilliant blues, reds, forest greens, and a good sprinkling of perennial black made for a chic collection with a downtown coolness that really sat in a league of its own," said Helen David, Harrods Chief Merchant, of the show.
