J. Mendel AW18

J. Mendel AW18

Citing vintage Hollywood rule-breakers Katharine Hepburn and Louise Brooks as his inspiration for Autumn/Winter 2018, Gilles Mendel at J. Mendel took glamour out to play, putting a contemporary spin on house codes in a moreishly tactile and textural collection. While many designers this season have dabbled with florals and lighter hues, blurring the lines between seasons, for Mendel this was a foray into the quintessential autumnal palette in deep rust, burgundy, moss, ochre, jet and midnight blue, washed across the most opulent of velvets, patchwork intarsia, corduroy, organza and tulle.

For day, cropped trousers à la Hepburn and turtleneck dresses – the season's go-to silhouette – velvet cords, midi skirts, belted jackets and leather coats took centre stage, while for evening – Mendel's traditional stomping ground – exquisite cocktail dresses, organza gowns, sequin, feather, embroidery and lace elements, mesmerised with exacting detail. And, all wrapped up in a flurry of furry coats, tufted shearling cuffs and collars, and even a grey tartan lacquered plastic trench, this was a collection boasting a tantalising mix of über-elevated, polished pieces for the oh-so modern Mendel woman.
