High-impact from end to end, for Michelle Smith at Milly, Autumn/Winter 2018 was an exploration of colour and all of its connotations. And, if previous seasons had erred on the dreamy or metaphorical, the message delivered here signaled loud and clear: 2018 is the year of empowerment and inclusivity.
Running through Smith’s very own rainbow mash-up in near monochromatic looks, red provided a dramatic opener, signifying power and strength, from structured jackets topping a scarlet satin sheath dress or a bandeau top and tailored trousers, while texture clashes came in the form of red-tinted Perspex high-waisted trousers paired with a wine-hued furry puffer jacket. For the yellow story, this was suped-up energy and positivity, as sunshine shades flowed through to mustard and vivid multicoloured sequins washed into the mix, culminating in a ticker-tape sequin strapless dress – proving an interesting foil to the more unisex camel coat over a spangly rose-gold shirt and trouser pairing, which exited next. Pink played a potent game in an oversized furry coat or tailored cocoon jacket atop a high-neck crop top, or was all-out flashy in a satin sweetheart jumpsuit. Silver took the final stand, making a dazzling disco ball exit in a sequin sweater and mini skirt pairing. Bringing vivacity and vigour to autumn/winter, Smith’s line-up coaxes us all to wear our feelings on our sleeve for the season ahead.
