Low key is the order of the day at The Row, where season after season Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen seem to breathe new lease of life into the minimalist aesthetic. Even the show itself is a no-fuss affair. This season it was staged at the design duo's Upper East Side boutique, with the diminutive Ashley herself on the door greeting guests. No celebrity front row, and, in fact, no formal seating altogether (those who arrived early enough perched on a few wooden chairs dotted around the shop-cum-art gallery, the rest clustered around doorways and staircases) meant that the attention stayed firmly on the garments, which, at the risk of sounding like a fashion cliché, could only be described as effortlessly chic.
The likes of Maggie Maurer and Jamie Bochert paraded the label's signature monochrome pieces, which for Spring/Summer 2017 consisted of black strapless tube dresses in starchy cotton, bandeau tops and slim leather maxi skirts, white cotton poplin dresses with mandarin collars, oversized cream chemise tunics topping cropped wide-leg trousers and nubbly knits, streamlined in their shapes but featuring extra-long sleeves. One white mini dress adorned with floral appliqués stood out among the crowd due to its unexpected frothiness, although paired with white plimsolls (as all the looks were – a sure sign that the ubiquitous white trainer isn't going anywhere), it still retained that inimitable restraint that is synonymous with the house.
