Victoria Beckham AW16

In fashion, part of moving forward is looking to the past and that is what Victoria Beckham did this season as she harked back to her first collection of corset dresses with a feminine line-up that centred around softly-boned bustiers. Unlike her first collection, however, these dresses were highly textural, crafted out of a mix of tweeds and jacquards, and multi-coloured, with stripes and checks in copper, green and burgundy – proving just how far the designer has come from her monochrome palette and strict pencil silhouette.

Hourglass shapes were exaggerated, with strapless balconette tops (sometimes layered over ribbed knits, other times with cut-outs beneath the bust to reveal slivers of flesh) paired with flared, high-waisted midi skirts. Meanwhile, coats came oversized in tweedy checks with exaggerated turn-ups at the sleeve and chunky buttons. The parade was chiefly focused on daywear – the most after-hours it got was a series of spaghetti-strap dresses, but even then they were cut away from the body and worn with boyish flats.
