Kenzo AW16

If the American anthem cut with soundbites from a speech by political rapper Killer Mike was to set something of a backdrop to Humberto Leon and Carol Lim’s Autumn/Winter 2016 Kenzo collection, then references to the cult Japanese anime cartoon Sailor Moon lightened the mood somewhat via nautical elements, blown-out blouses, sweet shoulder-capping frills and school uniform-esque jacket and skirt pairings.

A nostalgic splash of Americana made its way through the colour palette of denims and blues, but true to Kenzo form, the designers played up to the house’s more flamboyant roots with a vivid violet story, which played out in colour-blocking, a smattering of riveted leather and PVC, before a culmination of clashing prints in all manner of florals, glimmering gold, hot pink stripes and tiger, of course, were accessorised with XXL chain-link earrings in an array of colours.
