The gift of time and space to think of others has made kindness the number one luxury this year. And doesn’t it feel good? Good for who you are giving to, and good for you, too. Well, it’s almost addictive. I sent my mother one of the new Hermès lipsticks on her birthday and she was so thrilled I had to order her another two shades straight away. Then there’s my hero doctor friend whose life is quite unimaginable right now, so she is getting Gucci’s new ‘Sexiness’ sweatshirt because I know it will make her laugh (as she pulls it over her scrubs). My sister-in-law is self-isolating with three boys under ten – paging Lego Star Wars. And now I can’t spend Easter with my friends, well they’re all getting pink Champagne and chocolate. Which I shall recommend they have for breakfast.

A few years ago, I had to move country and spend the first few months living on my own before my family arrived. I touched down in New York to an empty apartment, with just the few possessions I could fit in a suitcase. The apartment was quiet and still. Bliss in some ways, heartbreakingly lonely in others. The next day a friend had a large plant delivered. I named the plant Keith, after my friend, and a few days later Keith flowered. In fact he flowered until the rest of the family arrived, and then continued to thrive until we all left, three years later. I will never forget it.
