Givenchy AW21: Celebrating Contrasts

Announced in the latter half of 2020, Matthew M. Williams’ appointment to the helm of Givenchy made headlines for all the right reasons. Williams is known for his subversive take on elegance. At Givenchy, his collections embody this edge – while retaining all the polish you’d expect from the storied maison. His approach is pragmatic, grounded in realism. Ultimately, how people wish to dress here and now.

“What I am trying to do is reflect today’s world,” reads his Givenchy manifesto. “The luxury of people wearing clothes, not clothes wearing people.” For Autumn/Winter 2021, this translates as little black dresses that skim the silhouette – sleek and confident – and structured tailored blazers, the right side of oversized.

Accessories speak to Givenchy signatures. The Antigona lives on, updated with Matthew M. Williams’ 4G emblem and padlock, inspired by those that adorn Paris’ bridges. By contrast, the Cut-Out is a new silhouette in Givenchy’s oeuvre, a genderless piece that distills Williams’ vision for the brand.
