Balenciaga has revelled in its many reincarnations, but what remains at the fore as a constant is its avant-garde approach to fashion; it being a forecaster of ready-to-wear trends. Originally established in 1919 in Spain by Cristóbal Balenciaga, today, the brand is led by Demna Gvasalia. Under the Georgian designer’s creative direction, Balenciaga has become more grounded in street practicality while riffing on the original couture silhouettes loved by the fashion elite. Gvasalia’s aim is to construct attitude in couture, as is showcased in dramatically pointed shoes, sculpted bags and jewellery exuding futuristic-like femininity – all explicitly underscored with vivid colourways and prints that demonstrate his masterful dexterity as a designer.
New Season
Balenciaga’s Spring/Summer 22 campaign transforms the themes of its viral show, “Red Carpet”, into virtual reality by Paris based artist Claudia Mate. Characters holding XX, Triplet, and Hourglass bags walk a computer-rendered red carpet wearing facsimiles of the collection, turning the photocall moment into a streaming game snapshot.
ICONIC BAG
A sharp yet elegant silhouette, the Hourglass bag is defined by negative space. Resting on a flat surface, the purse creates a half-moon shaped hole with its curved base, while a metal B-shaped pull dangles from a magnetic closure. The unique shape is designed to complement, rather than mimic, an hourglass form—sitting on the hip, suspended from a removable cross-body strap, or carried from a small top handle.
CULT SHOES
A rounded, tire-like silhouette defines Balenciaga’s latest footwear innovation. The Defender combines classic running shoe elements with unmistakable Balenciaga edge, with an exaggerated sole and an intentionally distressed upper for a worn-in look. A monochromatic palette, in faded black or dirty white, lends neutrality to an otherwise overstated aesthetic.
RED CARPET
Featured in looks 22 and 56 of the Red Carpet collection, Balenciaga’s Bat Rectangle sunglasses are set to be the must-have accessory of summer. Owing their name to their harsh winged shape, the sporty unisex frames have fast become a signature of Demna Gvasalia’s subversive design codes at the house.
