Need To Know: Men’s Jeans

From the stuff of gold miners’ uniforms to the modern man’s sartorial staple, denim has never worked harder – but that needn’t mean working hard to find your ultimate pair of jeans...

Know Your Denim

Decoding denim is easy when you know the terms and tricks of the trade

    Washed vs. Raw

“Raw denim jeans,” explains the DSquared2 team, “are made from denim that hasn’t gone through a pre-wash process.” This is to reduce shrinkage and give softness. Raw denim can be sanforized or unsanforized. “Sanforized denim,” explains Diesel’s experts, “has undergone a treatment that prevents shrinkage. Unsanforized denim will shrink between 5–10%.”

    Selvedge

Selvedge (or ‘self edge’) denim is crafted using a traditional shuttle loom, where large strips of fabric are produced with tightly woven bands on either side that prevent fraying and ravelling. A signifier of quality – look out for the tell-tale strips on the underside of your jeans, selvedge denim infers a brand’s focus on traditional craft, traceability and slower production processes.

Detail is everything where denim is concerned – from the dye of your jeans to the hardware that finishes them. For brands it’s a way of cementing personality and aesthetic. 7 For All Mankind uses ‘7’-branded rivets and embroidery to set itself apart; meanwhile, Jacob Cohen buttons are crafted in silver, leather, mother-of-pearl and 904L steel that’s also used in the creation of Rolex watches.

    Make It Last

The overarching advice for looking after your jeans is to wash them as infrequently as possible; simply spot clean and air whenever necessary. When it comes to indigo denim, the experts at Citizens of Humanity advocate a handy washing hack: “Put a teaspoon of salt in the drum to extract any extra indigo denim dye from the jeans and prevent it from rubbing off onto white clothes or furniture."

Just as denim comes in myriad washes, so too do jean fits vary in shape and vibe
