How to Fragrance Zone Your Home

Words by Bridie Newman

As life begins to feel a little more normal and we embrace a summer that promises much more than the last, we’re rediscovering the joy of spending time at home. While our WFH offices are still a thing for many of us – even if only partially – it can be difficult to balance work, home, and a social life, all under one roof.

The answer? Fragrance zoning, the wellness trend sweeping through our interior spaces. The concept involves using different scents to segment your day in order to evoke separate states of mind and to compartmentalise the day, whether that’s focusing during working hours or kicking back to switch off and relax. Here, our experts share their favourite home fragrances that emit wafts of calm, concentration and cosiness when they need it most.

Waking up to your favourite scent every morning is a sure-fire way to start the day on a positive note, but what if the scent could even help you get out of bed? Our beauty buying manager Imogen Porter recommends the refreshing scents of Diptyque’s Figuer scented candle for an energising boost, while our head of interior design Letitia Fitzgibbon prefers the invigorating notes of mint and sea breeze from Baobab’s Tsiraka Andilana Raffa candle.

Letitia Fitzgibbon, Head of Interior Design

"Mint is the hero when it comes to sharpening the mind, but it’s complimented with sweet ylang ylang and earthy vetiver, creating a scent that feels clean, airy, and full of possibilities."

Work Mode: On

Mia Collins, Head of Beauty

"I constantly have one of these at my desk. For me, the scent provides a grounding backdrop via sandalwood and cedarwood that allows me to focus and dedicate my energies to the task at hand."

An Olfactory Holiday

Annalise Fard, Director of Beauty, Home, Fine Jewellery & Watches

"Brise de Mimosa from L’Artisan Parfumeur is evocative of the crisp seasonal aromas that indicate the first signs of spring in the South of France. Violet leaves, jasmine and sea breeze feel like a balmy walk on the Riviera."

A Little Pick-Me-Up

Letitia Fitzgibbon, Head of Interior Design

"I reach for the Provence Ball, its mood-enhancing notes of lavender, basil and rosemary nod to the simple comforts of home: uncomplicated, familiar and uplifting – plus, it looks perfect on a bookshelf!"

After-Dinner Cocktails

Annalise Fard, Director of Beauty, Home, Fine Jewellery & Watches

"It’s peony season, so this exclusive from Ormonde Jane is the perfect scent for hosting. Top notes are fresh and zesty with mandarin and orange blossom, developing into velvety rose and heady peony, with base notes of cedarwood."

Arguably the most important of the fragrance zones, calming scents relax the mind and relieve stress before bedtime (anything to catch more winks). Imogen recommends the dream-inducing Sage and Oat Milk candle from Keys Soulcare to help you reset and recentre while Annalise opts for the smoky vetiver and smooth cashmere musk of Timothy Dunn’s Absolu Platinum No.1 candle for a soothing end to a busy day.

Imogen Porter, Beauty Buying Manager

"This Sage and Oat Milk Candle from Alicia Keys’ brand Keys Soulcare forms the first step in all of her wellness routines, with its wonderful calming and soothing scent to help nurture the soul."
