The Best Coats of AW20
Love them or hate them, colder climes are inevitable. Our philosophy? If you can’t beat them, lean in. Winter forecasts herald a welcome influx of sumptuous layering and coats galore – which, if you ask us, makes for ample reason to rejoice. Autumn/Winter 2020, we’ll see you now.
The classic trench coat is a perennial style icon that’s steeped in history. Burberry remains synonymous with the gabardine archetype – tracing its roots all the way back to the frontline of World War I. For a modern interpretation, look no further than sustainable fashion favourites Stella McCartney and Gabriela Hearst, who version the silhouette for the now with voluminous sleeves and pleats, respectively.
The Tailored Coat
Oversized enough to accommodate the season’s chunkiest knitwear – but not so much as to swamp the figure entirely, AW20’s tailored coats sit firmly on the right side of androgynous. The likes of Off-White and Joseph have us spoiled for choice with their longline, precision-cut iterations. Soften the edges with billowing trousers.
The Rain Mack
No amount of sudden downpours can dampen the spirits – or style – of the woman in a rain mack. So much so that Kassl Editions, coming soon for AW20, has made the garment its raison d’être, looking to vintage fisherman jackets as inspiration for its practical-yet-polished outerwear. Style up a storm with glints of gold jewellery.
Fear not the XXL puffer coat! Far from the preserve of hardy mountaineers, this season’s emboldened designs put pay to the idea that insulation equates to out-and-out bulk. Bottega Veneta, as per, can do no wrong in the genre – with its oversized silhouette the cream of the crop. Nanushka, meanwhile, revises the staple for AW20 in delicious faux leather for a hit of sophistication.
The Textured Coat
Maintaining snug-as-bug status amid the chill is a (teddy bear’s) picnic thanks to AW20’s textural treats – a pleasingly tactile platter that spans from Loewe (pictured) shearling to cuddlesome looks care of Max Mara and Stand Studio, new to Harrods this season. Cue the cosy!
The Wrap Coat
Bringing new meaning to ‘wrapping up’ for autumn, the wrap coat is this season’s most flattering outerwear proposition, bar none. Belted at the waist to create an hourglass silhouette, the style is the sleek antithesis to AW20’s bulkier offerings. Vive la différence.
