The Modern Gentleman’s Luxury Wardrobe

Feature: Quick Read
Words by Abigail Gurney-Read

The meaning of luxury is subjective. For one man it’s a freshly brewed cup of Colombian coffee. For another, it’s a fine watch. Despite its myriad incarnations, however, luxury is generally defined by the age-old adage of quality over quantity. A simple rule that, when followed, often results in success. So, if you’re only investing in a few key items this season, what should they be? Notepads at the ready.

Luxury Is Cream

In sartorial terms, cream is, well, the crème de la crème. An instant indication of a man at leisure. Because, let’s face it, you’re not getting down and dirty with handiwork when your jacket is eburnean Giuliva Heritage. An insouciant attitude goes with the territory. Lean into it.

Luxury Is a Fine Watch

Oh, to have the luxury of time itself... but a fine timepiece is, surely, the next best thing. Archival models that reference vintage silhouettes are the big news in haute horlogerie circles right now. Think the likes of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso, which this year celebrates its 90th anniversary, or Vacheron Constantin’s Roaring Twenties redux: the Historiques American 1921.

Luxury Is Suede

Notoriously tricky to care for – but nothing worth having is ever easy, right? – Suede is the fabric that, more than any other, feels like luxury. Soft like newly churned butter, the finest iterations are the best of silk and leather combined. As before, there’ll be no room here for outdoor pursuits at the mercy of the elements. But that’s rather the point, don’t you think?

Luxury Is Layering

Quantity does have its place in a luxury wardrobe – but think of layering as the exception that proves the rule. Everything in moderation. Layering is the considered fellow’s answer to statement dressing – a way to convey sartorial flair without looking like you’re trying. Balance a print with a classic base, and you’re onto a winner.
