The Return of the ’00s It-Bag: 6 Styles to Shop in 2026

Words by Sophia Miller

You’ll likely have already noticed the subtle slide towards all things Noughties in recent years. Trousers have become baggier and low-rise; the new everyday T-shirt is a cropped baby tee; jewellery is chunkier; and the bags being toted around look, well, a little familiar. True to the 20-year trend cycle, brands from Balenciaga to Fendi are capitalising on ’00s nostalgia to revive their most-loved trending bags of the decade as new editions for 2026. These are six of the best vintage-inspired bags to summon a little carefree turn-of-the-millennium energy.

The Balenciaga City

First released in 2001 and soon spotted on the arms of Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and the like, Balenciaga’s Le City bag – then called the Motorcycle – is perhaps the ultimate ’00s bag. Its slouchy shape, moto-inspired hardware and integrated mirror (for touching up your Lancôme Juicy Tubes lip gloss) make it as wearable now as it was then – and 2026’s it girls agree. After Demna re-issued the popular style back in 2024, it’s been worn by Kaia Gerber, Bella Hadid, and, in a full-circle fashion moment, former fan Ms Moss.

The Fendi Baguette

Christie’s calls the Fendi Baguette fashion’s first it-bag – and it’s certainly one of the most sought-after, with archival editions often inciting a feverish bidding war on re-sale sites and at auctions. In fact, there have been over 1000 iterations since it was launched in 1997, and the brand continues to capitalise on its party piece’s ongoing popularity with a new stream of sequinned, embroidered and embellished creations each season – each one somehow more covetable than the last. We’ll take that as evidence that Carrie Bradshaw’s influence still reigns supreme.

The Chloé Paddington

Designed by Phoebe Philo in the 2000s and brought back by Chemena Kamali for AW25 (carried by Alexa Chung, no less), the Chloé Paddington is another cult piece that you might recognise from the first time around. It’s already a hit with Gen Z shoppers, too – Vogue Australia reports that Depop searches for the piece rose 1,137 per cent after its runway debut. What makes it so good? Like many of the bags on this list, its just-chunky-enough hardware and relaxed shape make it the platonic ideal of a day-to-night piece – it’s one you’ll want to show off, but won't feel too precious about to actually use.

The Dior Saddle

Another candidate for the trophy of the ultimate Y2K bag is the Dior Saddle. Debuted by John Galliano on the SS00 runway and toted by Beyoncé, Paris Hilton and Sarah Jessica Parker (when she wasn’t wearing her Fendi Baguette). It’s enjoyed a steady resurgence in popularity since Maria Grazia Chiuri brought it back in 2018, perhaps one of the most timeless ’00s bag re-editions thanks to its equestrian inspirations and surprisingly practical shape. The one enduring feature? The dangling ‘D’ charm. Why not go full Gen Z and add to it with some more bag charms of your own?

The Saint Laurent Mombasa

Once a forgotten relic of YSL’s Tom Ford era, now unearthed from the archives by Anthony Vaccarello, the Saint Laurent Mombasa is fast becoming one of fashion’s favourite revival it-bags. Its distinctive crescent shape and handle (once horn, now leather and brass) mean it slides onto your shoulder just right, and its clean-lined, cool-girl vibe is just as relevant today as it was in 2001. Some say that the shape even inspired Matthieu Blazy’s Sardine bag for Bottega Veneta back in 2022.

The Louis Vuitton Speedy

A proud member of the Louis Vuitton roster since the 1930s, the Speedy isn’t technically a ’00s bag – but it definitely had a moment in the sun during the Y2K era, thanks to a series of viral collaborations with the likes of Stephen Sprouse (2001) and Takashi Murakami (2003). The house’s willingness to play with tradition and – literally – paint its biggest icons with the work of contemporary artists is testament to a forward-thinking vision that’s helped maintain its popularity through the generations. Pharrell agrees – the style was brought back as a star of the SS25 menswear show. Trends pass, but a Louis Vuitton Speedy is forever.
