Chopard’s savoir-faire is unrivalled in the worlds of watchmaking and fine jewellery. The maison’s founder, Swiss-born Louis-Ulysse Chopard, first began creating high-precision pocket watches and chronometers in 1860. Today, still family-led, Chopard remains synonymous with watchmaking excellence. The watchmaker of choice for the court of Tsar Nicholas II in the late 19th century, the storied brand is committed to keeping the Swiss art of watchmaking contemporary by handmaking its own movements in-house. While haute horlogerie may have created the foundations for the Chopard legacy, its foray into fine jewellery cemented them: the Happy Diamonds collection alone is testament to its haute joaillerie expertise, using a patented technique to create the illusion of floating diamonds.
The story of Chopard’s most iconic collection begins in 1976, when the idea of diamonds floating across a watch face was conceived as an alternative to traditional gem-set timepieces. Thanks to the same patented technique that first made it possible to trap precious stones between two transparent pieces of crystal sapphire glass, Happy Diamonds now encompasses fine jewellery in all its forms.
Chopard and cinema make a glamorous partnership. As well as adorning the world’s greatest stars – think Catherine Deneuve, Cate Blanchett and Fan Bing Bing, Chopard has been the official partner of the Cannes International Film Festival since 1998. Each year, the house creates a new red-carpet collection for the Montée des Marches, adding extra sparkle to the already glittering occasion.
Louis-Ulysse Chopard began designing timepieces in the 19th century, and before long his reputation for reliable and innovative designs had extended far beyond his native Switzerland. Today, Chopard continues to push the creative boundaries of Swiss watchmaking. Whether you opt for the playful Happy Diamonds or the streamlined Alpine Eagle, you’ll always be right on time.
