As the sun sets on summer, September can feel like a fresh start – both in life and in style. The mood for Autumn/Winter 2023? Sophistication. Show the world you mean business with a grown-up wardrobe led by insouciant tailoring, feminine power-dressing, floor-skimming silhouettes and pops of confident brights.
Fresh from being crowned ‘hottest brand in the world’ by The Lyst Index, Loewe blazes into the top spot again for Autumn/Winter 2023. This season, Jonathan Anderson’s penchant for optical illusion appears across a number of duchesse-satin shifts, printed with faded images of dresses, trench and faux-fur coats as if blurred in motion. Elsewhere, the creative director taps Loewe’s artisanal heritage with a focus on leather craft, ranging from slouchy, buttery tunics to cartoonish skirts and jackets à la Polly Pocket. Silhouette and texture is everything for AW23, and the same applies to accessories. Next on your wishlist is the Squeeze – a soft, unstructured bag concocted of ruched draping, topped with a sumptuously squishy handle.
L–R: Saint Laurent blazer, blouse, belt, leggings and bag; Stella McCartney jumpsuit, Alexander McQueen bag, Bottega Veneta sunglasses
If AW23 has one message, it’s “dress for the raise you want”. Power silhouettes in the form of razor-sharp tailoring and ’80s shoulders join corporate pinstripes and shirt-tie combos that will put you on the path for promotion.
A.W.A.K.E. Mode coat, Roksanda dress, Jil Sander earrings, Elleme bag, Jimmy Choo boots
A modest antidote to the recent stronghold of miniskirts, this season’s hemlines are all about length – and lots of it. Dresses, skirts and coats cascade to the floor, while loose-fitting trousers pool at your feet. Not an ankle in sight.
L–R: Rowen Rose coat, Prada bag, Falke socks, Roger Vivier shoes; Alaïa bodysuit and skirt, Hermès bag, Roger Vivier shoes
Buttery soft, high-shine or trompe l’œil – however you like it, leather continues to play a key part in our wardrobes for AW23. Every garment is fair game to this luxe material, so long as sophistication is at play.
With every new season comes a fresh influx of It-bags. For Autumn/Winter 2023, these range from Gucci’s revived Horsebit Chain Clutch – an archival reference to Tom Ford’s iconic era at the house – to Prada’s pared-back, triangular shoulder bag and Alexander McQueen’s quilted Seal bag, complete with a new logo. Meanwhile, accessories heavyweights Loewe and Bottega Veneta turn to slouchier silhouettes with two new styles apiece: at Loewe, the Puzzle Tote and Squeeze bag are the latest strokes of genius from Jonathan Anderson, while the Gemelli bag and Hop hobo bag look set to be Matthieu Blazy’s latest must-haves at Bottega Veneta.
