Fendi AW22: A New Equilibrium
Like many of this season’s standout collections, Fendi Autumn/Winter 2022 is a tale of twos. Two archival inspirations, two distinct aesthetics.
“The best way to explore the Fendi archives is through the Fendi wardrobes,” explains artistic director of couture and womenswear Kim Jones, who heeded his own advice when he found inspiration in a Spring/Summer 1986 blouse – unearthed by Delfina Delettrez Fendi in her mother’s wardrobe.
But the geometric prints and sartorial tailoring of the eighties were not inspiration enough on their own. Jones found their perfect counterpart in the light, diaphanous silhouettes of the house’s Spring/Summer 2000 collection.
These distinctive moments of the house’s past merge to form a new Fendi language that feels just right for now – a harmonious contrast of soft and strong, structure and fluidity. Think the likes of delicate, sheer chiffon tucked into tweeds, tailoring and corsetry. “It’s a wardrobe designed for every aspect of a woman’s life, for every generation,” says Jones.
As for accessories, a certain anniversary offered the opportune moment to dive into Fendi’s archives. The notorious Baguette bag turns 25 this year, promising a revival of three past editions, crafted by local artisans across Italy. Iconic then, now, forever...
