5 Heatproof Make-up Hacks for Summer

Feature: Short Read
Words by Shannan Sterne

Don’t get us wrong, summer sure is splendid. Any excuse to slip into a Hunza G swimsuit and sip on icy cold cocktails gets a yes, every time – but there’s nothing worse than looking in the mirror and being faced with mascara clumps, shifting foundation and patchy cheeks. Here’s a secret – humid train journeys, warm afternoon garden parties, and leisurely outdoor brunches don’t have to smudge your carefully applied make-up. In fact, the right skincare routine, lightweight foundations, and finely milled powders, can heatproof your expertly created look for a fun-filled day of activities. Combine the above with some handy application tips and your make-up will stay neatly in place despite record-breaking temperatures. Here’s how to master summer make-up like a pro.

First Skin's First

If your skin is cleansed and primed before you apply your make-up, your base is much more likely to stay in place. Heat increases sebum production – the oily, waxy substance produced by your glands – which in turn, can cause make-up to slip and slide when layered on top of it or clog pores if not thoroughly removed. You can dissolve excess sebum, and deep clean your skin for make-up application, using a vitamin-packed oil-based cleanser such as Armani’s black cumin oil-infused Crema Nera Get in Oil Cleanser. Use your fingers to massage a dollop onto wet skin and it will transform into a gel-like texture that captures impurities, then rinse off and dry.

Lightweight, antioxidant-rich moisturisers such as the Kora Organics Active Algae Lightweight Moisturizer act as a layer of primer to keep foundation in place, plus offer ample hydration without feeling heavy on the skin. The best thing? The infused glacier water and green algae offer an instant cooling effect. You should apply SPF all year round, but it’s especially important when you’re exposed to intense sunlight and UV rays, and Clarins’ gel-textured, SPF 50 formula absorbs in seconds to feel like a second skin and works as a great layer underneath make-up.

Good Foundations

With a heat-proof base, your make-up won’t budge – even if you’re perched on a sun-drenched balcony or you’ve persevered through summer in the city. Primer makes a huge difference, and Charlotte Tilbury’s SPF 50 Invisibly UV Flawless Poreless Primer defends skin against pollution and is packed with hyaluronic acid to deliver long-lasting hydration to help plump and cushion skin – making it easier for make-up application. If you’re looking for featherlight skin tints, look to the blendable Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Natural Skin Perfector. The hybrid formula is imbued with tamarind oil to boost skin elasticity for a smooth application and skin benefits with vitamin C and E helps to slow the rate of UV damage to your skin. A nifty application tip? Squeeze a few drops of tinted moisturiser onto clean fingers and massage in upward-outward motions until blended completely. Also, if you’re into medium-high coverage foundations, MAC’s Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation lasts up to 36 hours. It’s also oil-free and works to repel moisture (great for oily complexions). Just make sure you apply with a flat, dense brush as tools will help press the product into your skin to make it last longer.

Lock Your Look

Keep that base in place with finely milled, oil-absorbing powders – these types of formulas tend to be more on the dry side for absorbing shine, and mattify your skin without disturbing the shade and coverage of your foundation. Use a medium-sized fluffy brush or flat beauty sponge to cover your skin with Morphe’s colour-correcting, illuminating Bake and Set Powder – it will blur lines and keep oils at bay. Just make sure your liquid foundation has set first, if you dust it while it’s wet it can make your skin look cakey and will shift throughout the day. If unwanted shine appears, reach for Hermès’ Plein Air Blotting Papers, they absorb excess beads of sweat without disturbing your make-up. But, if you’re make-up is having the opposite effect and is starting to look dry, then a little face mist will refresh your look. The skincare equivalent to jumping in an icy plunge pool, Dr Barbara Sturm’s Hydrating Face Mist is infused with lemon, aloe vera and broccoli to give wilting skin a much-needed pick-me-up.

Heatproof Make-Up - Gucci Bronzer

Powder Play

When it comes to heatproof make-up, remember the golden rule: consistency is key. Cream and gel textures may slide over time, so it’s best to stick with matte products. For an instant dose of holiday sunshine, reach for Gucci’s Poudre de Beauté Éclat Soleil. The flattering matte comes in five different shades, each speckled with extremely fine golden shimmers, and offers medium coverage that can easily be layered. To apply, use a bronzer brush to sweep your bronzer across the high points of your cheekbones, temples, and bridge of your nose. Don’t stop at your complexion, buff and blend over your shoulders, collarbone, arms and legs for all-over glow. To cheat rosy, fresh-from-the-gym cheeks, use a small, soft, dome-shaped brush to swipe product away from your face in gentle whisps. If you’re making conscious beauty choices, reach for the refillable Hermès Rose Hermès Silky Blush Powder – the super fine pigment will cling to your skin, and is less likely to smudge from beads of sweat. The result being faux sun-blushed skin that lasts all day.

Waterproof Wins

Myth: All waterproof mascara is difficult to remove, and you shouldn’t be using it at all. Incorrect! Waterproof mascara is much like your regular lash lengthener, except it’s anhydrous, which means that it doesn’t contain water. This is because formulas made with water are less likely to cling to lashes when they encounter water.  Instead, waterproof mascara is made with alternative, lash-friendly ingredients such as waxes, silicones and/or polymers. Wear Suqqu’s Waterproof Mascara for dips in the ocean, sweat-inducing spin classes and lengthy hikes, not only will it stay put, but jojoba oil works as an eyelash enhancer, and protects hair follicles while helping to grow them thicker and longer. Another favourite? The Lancôme Lash Idôle Waterproof Mascara – it’s the iconic Idôle version you know and love (360 micro-bristles and all) but extra reliable thanks to a smudge-proof finish. If you struggle to remove waterproof mascara, squeeze a few drops of an eye make-up remover onto a reusable cotton pad and gently slide it down your lashes until they are clean.

Now you’re prepped and ready for a summer of Insta-worthy make-up looks, whatever the weather. It’s time to put your newfound knowledge to the test.
