It’s said that every cloud has a silver lining, and if there’s one thing to love about autumn and winter, it’s the coats. There’s a certain pleasure to be found in rediscovering your old favourites at the first sign of a cold snap – or, of course, treating yourself to something new. Tailored, trench, teddy; whichever way it comes, great outerwear is one of the soundest investments you can make for your wardrobe – attention must be paid. So, if you’re in the market for your next coat or jacket, these are the silhouettes that never go out of style.
As with any tailoring, finding the perfect tailored coat is all about the overall cut and fit. A silhouette borrowed from traditional menswear, it should sit just the right side of oversized – allowing it to maintain its sophistication, without appearing too prim and proper. For Autumn/Winter 2023, runways dictated that the longer the length, the better, with the season’s chicest styles sweeping all the way to the ankle. Top players this year include Victoria Beckham (pictured), The Row and Tove.
A perennial icon, the classic trench coat is steeped in history. Burberry is synonymous with the gabardine archetype, which traces its roots all the way back to the frontline of World War I. Since cementing itself as a mainstay of the autumn/winter aesthetic, the brand has reinterpreted the silhouette countless times, from traditional belted styles with signature Check trims to androgynous car coats and AW23’s faux-fur-trimmed pieces, courtesy of new creative director Daniel Lee. Elsewhere, the likes of Alaïa, Prada and Rowen Rose opt for statement over staple, reinterpreting the trench in chic leather finishes.
Outerwear’s edgiest and most protective proposition, puffer jackets continue to charm us season after season for their marriage of street-cred and practicality. For technical, weather-battling prowess, there could be none better than the likes of Moncler and Herno. But if you’re sticking to the city this winter, your favourite urbanite brands have just as much to offer, including Rick Owens’ oversized styles, Nanushka’s vegan-leather finishes and Prada’s sporty-chic cropped silhouettes, stamped with the coveted Triangle logo.
Maintaining snug-as-a-bug status amid the chill is a (teddy bear’s) picnic thanks to AW23’s textural treats – a pleasingly tactile platter led by Max Mara’s original camel-wool icon, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and Yves Salomon’s premium lambskin. All of which feel like being swept up into a warm hug. Cue the cosy!
