The Denim Jacket
Much loved for its throw-on appeal, the denim jacket is a versatile layer that can add a certain nonchalance to ladylike dresses, up the preppy-chic factor when paired with a white shirt and cropped chinos or, if slightly oversized, exude borrowed-from-the-boyfriend appeal.
Make Saint Laurent your go-to for a classic.
Denim has come a long way since its roots in Gold Rush era America. Once the stuff of labourers’ workwear, denim has become a sartorial staple that transcends the seasons – both in fashion and meteorological terms.
Here, we present an homage to the hard-working material and its many guises; talking you through the key ways to style it, this season and beyond.

Do The Double
Fashion’s no-no of the Noughties (think Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake), double denim has come full circle with A-listers including Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba and Olivia Palermo proving its style credentials. The doubled-up options are endless so mix it up by tucking a lightweight denim shirt into a pencil skirt to channel modern polish or teaming a boxy denim jacket with high-waisted jeans for a weekend-ready retro look.
Style take out: Darker denim tends to be more flattering so keep that in mind when working which washes to wear where.
Wear & Tear
A trend generated by the street style set, distressed denim has become the mainstay of many a fashion editor’s wardrobe. While said distressing spans everything from subtle signs of fading to full-on shredded patches, the (mis)treated denim is a favourite dressed up and down, in summer and in winter.
For summer, we’d team a pair of ripped skinny jeans with ballet pumps to play on their prim reputation. In winter, however, it’s rolled up boyfriend jeans worn with ankle boots that will make the mark. Come the evening, it’s all about adding a pair of Valentino Rockstuds to the mix.
No need for DIY, pick out your perfect pair from Citizens of Humanity, J Brand or Denim & Supply Ralph Lauren.
The Denim Shirt
Whether crafted from easy-breezy chambray or a heavier, more utilitarian cotton weave, there’s a denim shirt to suit every styling situation. A key player for those who want to double up their denim, we love ours cut for a slightly looser fit, buttoned up just enough, and with sleeves rolled to the elbows.

That '70s Style
Fashion’s rose-tinted revival of all-things ‘70s may have reached its crescendo during the Autumn/Winter 2015 shows but there aren't any signs of it fading soon; so revel in figure-flattering flares and denim dungarees, boosting leg-elongating potential with a pair of platform heels.
