Now available at harrods.com, we caught up with the Singaporean designer to find out the secret to his success…
You were born in Singapore but learnt your craft at London’s Central Saint Martins and the Domus Academy in Milan, how has this duality of East and West played out during your career?
Singapore, although being a tiny island, is a very rich, multi-cultural society. It has taught me diversity. I was brought up both in Chinese and English. ‘East meets West’ has come naturally to me, and this is the way the world goes now.

You worked at Emanuel Ungaro after graduating but were quick to launch your eponymous label, had you pinpointed the Andrew Gn ethos early on? How would you describe that ethos?
To design and make extremely beautiful garments that women cannot resist.
You’ve said that your personal motto is ‘perfection and beauty’, what trials have you had to overcome in achieving that?
To obtain the best, one has to be very demanding with oneself and with others. It is a daily fight; sometimes it would seem easy to take shortcuts.
It’s been said that you have a 21st Century mind but an 18th Century heart, how do the two work together? In which era do you find most inspiration?
I find great aesthetic satisfaction in the classical periods, but a fantastic excitement about modern times. I truly believe that if you don’t look back, you can’t move forward. My inspiration is drawn from many different eras, whether it be contemporary art, a piece of Fifties furniture, crafts or architecture of the past century, a panel of 18th Century textile, or the ancient Chinese ceramics that I treasure.
You have a truly international clientele; do you find that you have a particular nationality in mind when you design certain pieces?
Yes, my collections are sold all around the world. I do not design with specific nationalities in mind, the real challenge is to create coherent collections that will appeal simultaneously to the tastes and cultures of women living in London, San Francisco, Riyadh, or Shanghai.
How would you describe the Andrew Gn woman?
She’s a person who loves the finer things in life. She’s not afraid of making a statement when walking into a room (because you do get noticed when you wear Andrew Gn...).
A-list fans include Jessica Chastain, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Scarlett Johansson, what affect have red carpet appearances had on your career?
I greatly enjoy seeing these amazing women looking beautiful in my creations. It’s nice also to see that they immediately get on best-dressed lists when they wear my dresses...
Is there anyone you’d like to see in one of your designs that you haven’t yet?
The Duchess of Cambridge, she’s so naturally graceful, elegant and modern.
What’s next for the brand?
Our handbag line is taking off in a very promising way. This will bring us to the next level.
