5 Men’s Styling Tips for Summer in the City

Words by Tony Wilkes

In Paris, they’re called the jullietists and aoûtiens – those leaving the city in July and August for the annual summer exodus. While many of us would prefer to holiday or abscond for the countryside over warmer months, necessity dictates we may find ourselves (at least for a time) remaining in the metropolis. In this scenario, a man needs a wardrobe chosen with skill. Here are the essential men’s pieces for summer in the city – and easy updates you can make to your year-round wardrobe.

Nail the Foundations

To recommend a button-down shirt for summer may seem obvious, but it’s easy to feel overwhelmed for choice. Classics-wise, Eton has been honing the perfect shirt for nearly 100 years, while each option from 100Hands requires 34 hours of craft. Another alternative is a knitted polo – and don’t let the knitted part fool you. Those made of cotton and linen in a finer gauge are perfectly breathable and there are numerous crochet options. Casablanca, Amiri and Dries Van Noten deliver pieces ideal for layering when the evenings get cooler.

Keep it Short

Before you ask: yes, you can wear shorts. In fact, given the rise of the preppy menswear trend in 2025, this year it’s actively encouraged. A Bermuda pair is your easiest route. With their wider, straight-leg fit that hits around the knee, this tailored shape looks assuredly grown-up. You also won’t go wrong with simple neutrals – they’ll form the foundation for all kinds of outfits, and allow you to play with pattern and print elsewhere. In the event you find yourself between land and sea, the best men’s swim shorts also double as punchy options for terra firma.

Relax Your Tailoring

The thought of wearing a suit during summer may not appeal – but, when chosen rightly, there’s no need to dread it. The key is opting for lightweight fabrics, preferably linen, and roomy, laid-back cuts without unnecessary padding. Giorgio Armani is the most famous for this style, and we’d also recommend Zegna, Lardini and Eleventy. (The Italians know all there is to know about looking good in the heat.) As the mercury rises, it’s perfectly acceptable to forgo a shirt and tie and go for a simple T-shirt or tank top.

Lean into Denim

Cotton and linen typically make up the lion’s share of a summer wardrobe – but denim can definitely play a role. Though less breathable, it wins points for versatility and attitude. Straight-leg jeans in a light wash transcend trends, and pair with all kinds of shirts and T-shirts. For cooler days (inevitable in London) a denim jacket will come into its own. Trucker styles have all the right proportions, and arrive via a range of brands from Loewe and Amiri to Cole Buxton this season.

Best Foot Forward

As a general rule of thumb, we’d steer away from sandals in the city – save them for your next holiday. Instead, take your pick from low-top trainers, espadrilles, boat shoes and loafers, each so versatile they’ll work with casuals and relaxed tailoring. Standouts include Brunello Cucinelli’s suede sneakers, TOM FORD Robin boat shoes and Zegna’s SecondSkin pairs, made from leather that fits like a glove.
