Interview With: Tomas Maier
Not only is he the designer for his own brand, but German-born Tomas Maier is also the Creative Director for Bottega Veneta. We talk to Tomas about his inspirations, designers that he admires and who the Tomas Maier woman is.
How would you describe your design aesthetic?
Uncomplicated and thoughtful.
"I was quite creative as a child and enjoyed building something from nothing."
What is the ethos behind your brand?
Edited and essential – a designer’s point of view on casual living.
What took you into fashion - when did the interest begin and how did it grow?
I had always dreamed of being an architect but did not want to follow in my father’s footsteps. I was quite creative as a child and enjoyed building something from nothing.
How does your life and surroundings influence your design?
As life goes on, one realises that the joy in accumulating is relative to the beauty of what you have – therefore now I’m in a “less-is-more” phase of life and appreciate being surrounded by little, but of the highest design integrity.
Is there another designer whose work you particularly admire?
I like industrial design as much as fashion. A great car or boat is as exciting to me as a beautiful coat from Cristóbal Balenciaga.
Who is the Tomas Maier woman?
Unfussy, active, smart and self-assured. One who is confident enough to know what works for her.
You've just shown your SS15 RTW collection in New York, what was the inspiration/focus for this line?
A continuation from Cruise: light–hearted and escapist with a bit of an edge. It looks simple but it isn’t.
