Ermenegildo Zegna: City and Nature
While Stefano Pilati’s debut collection for Ermenegildo Zegna looked to the union of industry and savoir-faire, the designer’s second collection, for AW14, played on the dualities of city and nature, taking all involved on a journey towards the primordial universe to define the origins of the Italian brand.
Relating Zegna to the city via its traditional suiting and centring its ties to nature on the brand’s renown for fine natural fabrics, Stefano Pilati contextualised the collection - a perfect fusion of formalwear and sports-inspired pieces; light and dark - by commissioning director Johan Söderberg to create a film that looks both to space and to contemporary urban life for answers.
The film depicts a real scientific path and a unique set of trajectories formed from Milan to the far edge of the universe, as traced by astrophysicist Fiorella Terenzi, Professor of Astronomy at Florida International University, and Professor Neil deGrasse Tyson, Director of Hayden Planetarium, with a backing track that features radio waves from space converted to sound and transformed into music with a classical blend.
