Lightweight Layering

Once the preserve of country weekends and summers spent in the Hamptons, knitwear is now a catwalk mainstay thanks to SS14 appearances at Burberry, Paul Smith and John Smedley. Worn as a transeasonal layer under smart suiting and tailored coats, this casual classic becomes a stylish marker of effortless everyday style.

"Replacing the traditional waistcoat [with a cardigan] creates a more casual look and gives men the option of taking the suit jacket off completely, helping to transform the outfit into a relaxed and comfortable look you can wear into the evening after a day's work," Marcel Floruss, the sartorial brains behind menswear fashion blog One Dapper Street tells us. With that in mind, it's not hard to see why celebrities are turning to this wardrobe staple for a considered red carpet revamp.

Towing the line with an understated take on smart-casual, Ryan Reynolds dressed down his shirt and tie combo with a soft cardigan in heather grey and a single-breasted car coat. Proving you can take your cardigan to the party and still hit the mark, David Gandy paired a sleek black knit with a monochrome jacket and matching tie. Meanwhile, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau took the look into off-duty territory with a two-tone cardigan, indigo jeans and a smart blue blazer.
