The Best Brunch Restaurants at Harrods

Words by Natalie Reed

Brunch is the most informal of meals and – dare we say it? – probably the most fun. Taken any time between late morning and early afternoon, there’s no need to get up early and hurry home or back to the office. It’s a relaxed, leisurely affair that doesn’t fit into the workaday routine – a pleasure reserved for the weekend.

Just as the name itself is a hybrid of breakfast and lunch, brunch allows you to pick and mix your favourite elements from each. A glass of Champagne with your avocado sourdough? Of course! Another piece of patisserie? Why ever not.

It’s also a chance to pick and mix your guests: for some, it’s a regular date with friends to gossip about the week’s adventures à la Sex and the City; for others, it’s all about spending quality time with family. It might be an intimate rendezvous with a new date or perhaps you’re flying solo with nothing but a brilliant book for company. Whatever the occasion, Harrods has the brunch spot to suit.

Harrods Café

With a bustling, breezy charm, Harrods Café is the place to come for a spot of people-watching and a casual catch-up over classic croque-monsieur or rotisserie-chicken Caesar salad. But there’s another reason to make a beeline for this Harrods hideaway, now with two locations on the Lower Ground and Third Floors: the Braffle. Another hybrid that we firmly believe is an improvement on its two parts, the Braffle is 50 per cent waffle, 50 per cent brioche – and 100 per cent irresistible. With a selection of toppings, both sweet (we recommend the crème pâtissière and fresh berries) and savoury (breakfast Benedict with ham), it might well become your new brunch obsession.

Chai Wu

You might think brunch has always been about poached eggs and pastries, but in China, people have been brunching on dim sum since the inns and teahouses dotted along the Silk Road trade routes began serving an array of tasty little dishes to hungry travellers.

Closer to home and designed with 21st-century Knightsbridge residents and shoppers in mind, there is Chai Wu. The menu offers an exquisite selection of delectable dumplings, such as lobster topped with beluga caviar, crystal sea bass with gold leaf, and scallop and prawn shao mai with XO sauce. Can’t choose? The steamed dim sum platter is the perfect place to start. An appetising list of pan-Asian small dishes – from tempura soft-shell crab to wagyu puffs – adds further texture and flavour to your Eastern brunch.

Prada Caffè

My oh Miuccia! Every detail of this chic eatery and summer terrace is informed by the distinctive style of Milan’s fashion queen, making it the destination of choice for those who like their brunch spots camera-ready and front-row-fabulous.

A tempting all-day selection of pastries and toasts, served on Japanese porcelain inspired by ancient Celadon pottery, should satisfy your savoury cravings, but it’s the patisserie that is the real showstopper here, with exquisite bites including pistachio tiramisù, fresh fruit tartlet and gianduja cake presented with all the finesse of couture. Classic aperitivos, such as a Campari spritz or Negroni Sbagliato, add a further dash of Italian flair. Cin-cin!

The Coffee Bar

Brunch doesn’t always need to be a complex affair. Sometimes the best late-morning meals are those that are quick, convenient and delicious. This is what The Coffee Bar is best at. Situated in the heart of our Roastery & Bake Hall, here you can enjoy a mug of our very own coffee while smelling the beans roasting behind you.

When it comes to food, this is where to come for a freshly baked pastry – a cinnamon bun perhaps, or one of our ever-popular pains au chocolat. A filled ham and cheese croissant, meanwhile, provides a more substantial offering. Open for walk-ins only, The Coffee Bar is also a brunch option that doesn’t require planning; just take a seat at the counter when the moment takes you.
