5 Trending Coats to Invest in This Season

Words by Sophia Miller

There are two kinds of people: those who meet autumn with a frown, and those who can’t wait for the cold-weather wardrobe switchover. Why? Because the arrival of the fall season means the return of knitwear, boots and – of course – coats. When temperatures plummet, your outerwear becomes the outfit, so a great coat is one of the soundest fashion investments you can make. Here’s our guide to the brands and trending silhouettes on every fashion editor’s wishlist for Autumn/Winter 2025.

Make it Merlot

When it comes to AW25 colour trends, it’s hard to escape red. Burgundy, oxblood, merlot: whatever you call these rich, darker shades, this is the MVP (P for palette) of autumnal dressing. Layer a wool number from Colombo or Wolk Morais with a knit of the same hue, or embrace texture with a leather or shearling bomber jacket from the likes of Nour Hammour, Simkhai and Self-Portrait – all favoured by the Harrods editors this season.

Turn up Texture

From plush shearling to tactile teddy and faux fur, there’s no resisting the warm embrace of a textured coat when winter hits – and it just happens to be one of the season’s biggest trends. The AW25 collections offer an extensive menu, including statement Chloé pieces – exclusive to Harrods – and Jacquemus’ ultra-cropped leather aviator.

’70s Suede

Haven’t you heard? Boho is back – and the trend extends far beyond floaty maxi dresses. According to Google, searches for brown suede are up 69% versus last year, and you’ll notice the material adorning everything from bags to boots and, naturally, outerwear. Lovers of tailoring may opt for a suede blazer from the likes of Arma or Veronica Beard, or you can dip a toe in with a slouchy bomber jacket. So far, so ’70s.

Fringe Festival

On the subject of texture: consider a fringed coat this season. A tasselled trim or two never fails to bring a little attitude, whether artfully applied to a scarf-style wool cape or wrap coat, or woven mid-sleeve or bodice à la Lafayette 148 and Loewe. It’s the subtle one-and-done statement you never knew your wardrobe needed.

Think Heritage

Tweed, herringbone, trench coats and wax jackets: AW25 takes eccentric inspiration from the attire of British aristocracy. Embrace those heritage codes the easy way with a classic wool coat in a neutral palette like grey, brown or monochrome. Meanwhile, magpies can look to Alessandra Rich and Huishan Zhang for a sequin-embellished take on the trend.

Harrods Cashmere

Made from the highest quality grade-A cashmere, our sustainably sourced collection is spun and knitted in Scotland – ranging from fine to heavy gauges in classic designs to see you through autumn and winter.
