The Best Work Bags for Women, According to a Harrods Editor

Words by Abigail Gurney-Read

With many of us now back in the office on a regular (if not full-time) basis, the need for a work bag that can handle the week’s shapeshifting schedule is undeniable. These heavy lifters must navigate all scenarios from client meetings to chaotic commutes, carrying everything but the proverbial kitchen sink. So, here’s how to choose a bag that will work as hard as you.

How to Choose the Right Work Bag

There are various considerations to factor in when choosing a professional plus one. First and foremost: what does your working day demand of you? If you’re rarely without a laptop or hefty stack of paperwork, an inner sleeve is non-negotiable. Do you need additional pockets, or can you afford to go minimalist? The adage may be ‘dress for the job you want’ – but, when it comes to work bags, it pays to be realistic. Head first, heart second.

That said, it’s absolutely possible to strike a balance between function and fashion – and you’ll find numerous styles to support this at Harrods. Perhaps it goes without saying, but I will anyway: roominess is key. Since the office is rarely the place for dinky cross-bodies or clutches to ride solo, totes and XL shoulder bags take centre stage. The large Acne Studios Camero is a favourite of mine for commuting, for the simple fact that it can be zipped. In a similar vein, securely fastened options like the Prada Bonnie, Bottega Veneta Barbara and Mulberry Bayswater offer peace of mind in busy cities.

What size work bag do I need?

If I’ve learned anything from my years deskside, having some wiggle room in your work bag is no bad thing. Chances are you’ll take home more than you arrived with, so give yourself some leeway with a shape that’s a little on the large side. If you opt for a structured silhouette – the Loewe Amazona 180 or DeMellier’s New York tote, for example – no one will be any the wiser if it isn’t maxed out.

Can a work bag be stylish and practical?

Without a doubt. Toteme, Saint Laurent and Balenciaga – the list goes on – are among the names serving bags with beauty and brains. As a good rule of thumb, don’t rely on one piece to do everything. You wouldn’t wear your boardroom tailoring on a weekend brunch, so why expect your work bag to satisfy every situation? We’re looking for polish and purpose, not a sack of all trades.

Are tote bags suitable for the office?

While one definition of ‘tote’ may be of canvas novelty, the other side of the coin – something in premium materials and crafted with exacting attention to detail – is absolutely office appropriate. Finished with ‘H’ hardware, this signature suede style from the Harrods collection (pictured below) gets it right, as does the Chloé Spin East-West in classic black leather.
