The Coat Shapes You Need For AW14

It’s never too early to start buying your new season coat, especially when dropping temperatures are making getting dressed in the morning oh-so troublesome. Take some style notes from our guide below of top coat shapes for AW14.

The Biker
Even the girliest of girls can rock a biker this season, Saint Laurent being the go-to brand for the hottest designs. New York DJ and style maven, Leigh Lezark (pictured above), teams hers with a floral dress and lace-up boots for the ultimate girl-meets-boy look. If you want to make your look more feminine, opt for a ladylike heel – we love Dolce & Gabbana’s Hamisland Lace Pump.

The Cape
The ultimate in elegant shapes, a cape will give you a wonderfully feminine silhouette. Showcased on the AW14 catwalks at Ralph Lauren, Saint Laurent and Burberry Prorsum, cape coats are best worn with a slimmer silhouette on the lower half so go for skinny trousers, pencil skirts paired with a heel. We love the range of capes at Harrods of London.

The Trench
Always a classic, the trench coat is a truly iconic style. A fashion staple that dates back to the 1850s, Burberry is famed for its recognised-everywhere trench coat. Give yours an update for AW14 and try Escada Sport’s Marlies style; with its tweed-effect print, this is a new season must-have. Top tip: always belt your trench at the waist to add shape. If it’s good enough for Caroline Issa…

The Blanket
Burberry’s monogrammed blanket coat may be the most covetable piece of fashion to be seen on the AW14 runways. Gorgeous in its rich colours and geometric print, it’s near impossible to not want to get cosied-up in this beauty for AW14. If you favour a monochrome look, Stella McCartney’s Houndstooth design in go-with-everything grey is a sure-fire way to channel Autumn/Winter chic.

The Bomber
Is there nothing Emmanuelle Alt (pictured above) cannot wear with aplomb? Here, the French Vogue Editor teams an enviable bomber jacket with ankle-skimming leather trousers and black midi-heels for an effortlessly chic look. If you’re thinking of opting for a bomber to stave off autumn chills, look to Carven and 3.1 Phillip Lim for coats that will have everyone talking.
