On Location At Shutters On The Beach

With its year-round sunny skies and wide stretches of sandy beaches, not to mention the statement-making Art Deco architecture, Santa Monica, LA, was the perfect backdrop for our summer dressing story, especially when it required shooting in the middle of dreary January.

The beachy vibe of our accommodation, Shutters on the Beach, provided easy inspiration for the effortless cotton dresses, sun-bleached white separates, backless gowns and relaxed tailoring that made up our looks, styled on model Anniek Kortleve, who, with her Renoir-esque strawberry blonde curls and porcelain skin provided a unique slant on the traditional girl-in-LA shoot.

Perfectly perched on the Santa Monica Bay promenade, just down the beach from the historic Santa Monica Pier, Shutters on the Beach, a The Leading Hotel of the World, recalls the traditional architecture of Southern California’s golden coast, with its clapboard and slate-grey shingled exteriors adorned with flower-covered trellises and cabana-striped awnings. The 186 rooms and 12 suites are artfully arranged around a sun-drenched rooftop pool deck, which overlooks the ocean, and feel as cosy as individual cottages thanks to crisp white sheets, shells innovatively used as book ends, in-room fireplaces to ward off midwinter chills (a possibility even in LA), a book of poetry placed every evening on the nightstand and a Bath and Beach chest packed with jet-set essentials.

Each sprawling marble bathroom features shutters that open from the bath to outside views (if you’ve never soaked in a tub overlooking the great outdoors, you haven’t experienced the true meaning of calm), making this hotel experience one to remember.
