These Puffer Jackets Are the Ultimate Winter Essential

Words by Tony Wilkes

It’s hard to imagine a time before the invention of the
puffer jacket. Yet before 1936, when an American adventurer thought to stuff down feathers into a quilted coat after a near-deadly brush with hypothermia, mankind had no way of wearing what is essentially a supremely toasty duvet. And equally surprising: puffer jackets weren’t even fashionable until the 1980s. But luckily for us, 2026 offers a wealth of new options to see us through the coldest months, from futuristic styles and fashion-forward collabs to your tried-and-tested classics – all available at Harrods.

Rick Owens x Moncler

A guide to puffer jackets must surely begin with Moncler. Founded in 1952 in a small alpine village, the brand began as a pioneer of mountaineering gear for the most extreme expeditions. Since then, Moncler has sent its technical down jackets into the stratosphere, thanks largely to smart collaborations with luxury fashion’s biggest names. This year, the brand continues its bestselling partnership with Rick Owens, blending functional, high-tech design with the avant-garde spirit of “the Prince of Darkness”.

Raxxy

Raxxy is unlike anything else in the luxury outerwear space,” say our Buyers. “With its bold proportions and geometric influences, it doesn’t just follow trends – it creates a new language for fashion.” A new arrival to the Menswear department, the London-based brand fuses Chinese aesthetics with a study of maths and architecture to transform puffer jackets into wearable sculptures. Canada Goose

Canada Goose has been specialising in performance outerwear since 1957. The Toronto-based brand has kept its production entirely in Canada where, they say, cold weather is part of the national identity. The brand’s puffer jackets have been worn by countless explorers, most famously Laurie Skreslet, the first Canadian to reach the top of Mount Everest, as well as the United States Antarctic Program Scientists. For journeys closer to home, you can’t go wrong with the brand’s bestselling Chilliwack and Wyndham coats, loved for their generous insulation and oversized hoods.

Stone Island

No one does fabric research quite like Stone Island. Based in its design facilities in Ravarino, Italy, the brand is dedicated to relentless experimentation – that’s how they ended up with jackets made from 100% stainless steel film normally used for lining the cockpits of planes. Here Stone Island also fine tunes its dyeing techniques, working with an archive of more than 60,000 colour recipes. The result are puffer jackets using techniques and colours never before seen in the industry.
